Reflections: a journey of growth, wisdom and beauty: an immersive film and photographic exhibition debuts the Nutshell this Sunday!

Winchester born and bred, Kat presents her maiden exhibition “Reflections” to be held at the Nutshell in Winchester on 28th April. The exhibition incorporates a series of photographic portraits, a photographic book featuring interviews, portrait photography and street photography, an immersive film and a slide show featuring photography in and around Winchester, past and present.

Reflections": a journey of growth, wisdom and beauty is an immersive film and photography project featuring the older generations of Winchester. The project hands them a place  to be seen, offers them a voice to be heard and aims to embrace their wisdom and share their experience of getting older and gain valuable insights into their lives. These thoughts are presented through creative storytelling to not only draw the interest of younger generations, but to also help to combat ageism and associated stereotypes.

Come along between 11 and 5 this Sunday to share the journey; it promises to be a thought- provoking experience - all ages welcome, free admission.

Winchester's Queer Ceilidh Dance

Winchester’s Queer Ceilidh

Why Queer Ceilidh?
Ceilidh dancing is a genre that emphasises the sociability of dances. It is often -- almost always -- called gender-free, it's inter-generational and family-friendly, and everyone is encouraged to partner with whoever they like. In this context, queerness isn't about who you partner with in a romantic way, but about rethinking how we relate to one another as a community, pushing back against social pressure to separate into cliques based on age, ethnicity, class, gender, school... WinQeilidh welcomes everyone, encourages consent culture, and teaches dancing without making assumptions about dancers.

What kind of dances do we do?
It really depends on the night, but we might do barn dances from English and American traditions, contra or Playford dances, Irish or Scottish ceilidh dances, Scandinavian or other international folk dances, French/bal dances, Irish sets, American swing, or couple dances like waltz and polka. We might even invent our own dances!

Who goes?
WinQeilidh dances are open to everyone (under 14s must be accompanied by an adult). We also welcome enquiries from musicians of any age who have some experience playing for folk dance; our regular live music is anchored by the inspired fiddle playing of Linda Game, who is known around the country and beyond for her lively, energetic dance music.

What does it cost?
Our regular series is £10 for the general public and just £5 for students from any school or university.

Your reflection is staring back at you. Wide eyed and full of hope. Mirrors, lights, colours and sounds. The world is your Kaleidoscope.

Inspired by research into how a baby’s sense of sight develops and how they instinctively begin to categorise colour, watch as a multi-coloured Kaleidoscope is brought to life for you and your baby.

MARYLAND

TICKETS

TICKETS

The Nutshell and the University of Winchester are bringing together students, young people and members of the local community on Saturday 16th March for a script-in-hand performance of Lucy Kirkwood’s ‘howl’ of a play, Maryland.

Lucy wrote Maryland in just two days provoked by the killings of Sabina Nessa, Sarah Everard, Bibaa Henry, Nicole Smallman and Zara Aleena in a short space of time in England. She says, “This play was for many years a private conversation with myself…a way of expressing what I feel about a culture of violence against women, but I am sharing it because I wonder if it might express a little of what other people feel about it too.”

This is a powerful play which deals with difficult issues, opening up the subject of gender violence. Yet it is also much funnier than you might expect introducing a chorus of modern-day furies who speak with unified anger, disbelief, despair and bouts of unsettling humour.

Lucy Mangan writing in the Guardian said "Maryland is weeks, months, years, generations of pain and fury distilled into something truly powerful. I would like to see a recording, or a script pressed into the hands of every schoolgirl, to arm them for the struggle. And every schoolboy. Because not all men, but more men than you think."

The Metamorphosis

As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a monstrous insect.

tickets

tickets •

The Metamorphosis is a new adaptation of Franz Kafka’s classic story of a man whose society causes him to feel so isolated and worthless that he physically transforms into a giant insect. Kafka's Prague in 1915 was full of confusing bureaucracy, indecipherable regulations and a host of reasons why Gregor should grow to consider himself utterly worthless. Today, our world bustles along with little time or energy to notice those around us and social media bombards us with images of perfect people with perfect lives.

Following his shocking metamorphosis Gregor finally begins to realise what it means to be human. But is it too late? As his mind adapts to his new life Gregor struggles to hold on to his humanity, and his family begin to undergo their own transformations.
Franz Kafka's story of a misfit trying to adapt to his busy world is as relevant now as it ever was. This new adaptation of a classic tale of alienation explores the ways modern life conspires to isolate us, and the parts of being human which bring us closer together.

For Ben and Alice, this year’s Christmas will certainly be one they will never forget.  They just can’t believe that the only present they get from their Granddad is a battered old box with a tatty bit of paper inside.  No money, no mobile phone, just a piece of worthless old junk! Or is it?

Late on Christmas Day night, two strangers appear, the eccentric time-travelling Mia Bell and Tempus, the crazy whirling dervish who carries them off on a magical adventure to the past.  Mia and Tempus need to make Ben and Alice understand that family, love and honour are the valuable things in life, the things worth fighting for. And fight they must for the evil Professor “H” Laszlo is hot on their heels and seeks to steal everything that means something to them, threatening their very existence.

Will Ben and Alice be lost forever or will they learn in time that sometimes the best present can be the most unexpected of things.
